The terms travel together but do different jobs — and sending staff to the wrong course wastes both money and urgency.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is the organization protecting people from itself: codes of conduct, safe recruitment, reporting channels, PSEAH. Every organization that touches communities needs it — it is increasingly a donor compliance requirement. That is our Child Protection and Safeguarding course.
Child protection programming
Child protection programming prevents and responds to abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence against children in the community: case management, referral pathways, working with families and authorities. The same course carries this core, and pairs well with Gender Based Violence for protection teams.
Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE)
CPiE is that work under humanitarian conditions — displacement, family separation, recruitment risks — aligned with the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action. Field teams in South Sudan, DRC or refugee-hosting areas need Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE), and where conflict is active, Child Protection in Armed Conflict adds the legal frameworks — the Six Grave Violations, MRM monitoring — that context demands.
A simple rule
HQ and support staff → safeguarding. Community programme staff → child protection. Humanitarian responders → CPiE, plus armed-conflict where it applies. Many organizations sequence all three across a year — cohorts for each run monthly across our training cities and online; the full track lives in our Gender & Protection category.
